Beauties at New Year's

Comments - Attractive scene of beauties in an interior at New Year's. The standing woman holds a small dog in her arms, stroking its fur as she watches the children playing a gay with strings in the next room. A beauty kneels on the floor nearby, balancing her hand atop the pokers stuck in the ashes of a brazier. Tobacco sets and books are scattered about the floor, and a niche at the back of the room holds a small potted flower. Shimenawa ropes are hung overhead, a traditional holiday custom. Wonderful detail in this charming Edo era design.
