Sneaking Past a Child, 1860

Series; Picture Scroll of the Modern Genji

Sneaking Past a Child, 1860 - Amusing image of Prince Genji hiding beneath a colorful kimono as he tries to sneak past a young girl who wears matching attire. He crouches on the floor, holding the robe over his head as the child raises an ornate lantern over him, looking down with a slightly concerned expression. The other women smile with delight at the playful trick, the seated beauty at right giggling into her kimono sleeve. The room overlooks an expansive view of the water beneath a dark night sky, with the lighted windows of a mansion visible at right. A charming subject with lovely color and detail, including a subtle burnished pattern in Genji's black robe and embossing in the white kimono trim.
