Actor as a Puppet Yaoya Hanbei, 1856

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene depicting "ningyoburi," a style of acting imitating the exaggerated motions of puppets. Here, the actor portraying the greengrocer (Yaoya) Hanbei stands on a stone ledge, bending his head down with a smile and holding his hand stiffly upright. His striped blue coat is slipping off the shoulder of his striped tan kimono, worn over a red under robe with a black collar. A view of a street at night fills the background, with bearers carrying a palanquin with a lantern at right, and buildings in dark silhouette vanishing into the distance. A handsome design.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Backed with paper. A few wormholes, repaired. Toning, staining and slight rubbing at bottom edge, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
