That Person Otoyo

Series; Thirty-six Good and Evil Beauties, 1876

That Person Otoyo - Fantastic portrait of the beautiful Otoyo from the tale of the vampire cat of Nabeshima. The mistress of the Prince of Nabeshima, Otoyo was actually a monster cat in disguise, sapping her master's strength as she visited him each night. Here, she is shown leaning against a fine lacquer armrest in the palace, her chin in hand as she looks down with a pensive expression. Her true form appears in the shadow of a furry cat cast on the shoji screen at right by the light falling from the open door of the lantern. The shaft of light is shaded with rosy pink, with a red flame flickering inside the lamp. A terrific image from this rarely seen series, beautifully detailed with embossing in the white kimono trim and fine bokashi shading. This image is illustrated on page 58 of Amy Reigle Newland's recent book, "Time Present and Time Past: Images of a Forgotten Master, Toyoharu Kunichika."
