Series; Portraits of True Loyalty and Chivalrous Spirit, 1868
Kurahashi Densuke Kiyohara no Takeyuki - Terrific portrait of Kurahashi Densuke Kiyohara no Takeyuki, one of the 47 ronin, during the famous night attack on Lord Kira's palace. He holds a lantern high as he leans forward, the shaft of light illuminating the darkness as he leans forward, looking ahead with a determined expression. He grips his sword with his other hand, ready to spring into action. The cape of his helmet depicts a fierce dragon and red flames. After his master's death, Takeyuki disguised himself as a cloth merchant while the vendetta was being planned. He was just 24 years old when he committed suicide along with his fellow ronin. A bold and striking design, with beautiful bokashi shading and a dusting of mica in the background. A great subject from this early Yoshitoshi 47 ronin series.
