Courtesan and Companion, 1879

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of a courtesan and a companion in private quarters. The beauty smiles happily as she looks up at him, but he regards her with a solemn expression. He wears a black kimono patterned with stylized motifs of carps and waves. A striking red kimono with two dragons hangs on a black lacquer stand behind the couple. At left, a woman looks furtively back at them. Behind her, a locking black lacquer chest is topped with sliding panels with autumn maple leaves on them. The actor at right is Ichikawa Danjuro. An attractive design with lively color and nice detail in the setting and clothing.

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A couple small thinning spots, repaired. Slight toning, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
