Takeda's Troops Die in Battle at Mt. Temmoku, 1866

Comments - Dramatic depiction of the Battle of Temmokuzan in 1582 depicting the last stand of Takeda Katsuyori against the forces of Tokugawa Ieyasu and Oda Nobunaga. After burning his own residence, Shinpu Castle, Katsuyori and his followers fled into the mountains. They sought safety at the Takeda fortress of Iwadono, but were refused entry, so he committed suicide while his retainers battled their enemies. At right, a samurai reels backwards as he is hit by a shot, gripping his spear overhead as blood flows from his mouth. Just below, another warrior slumps over his fallen horse, bleeding from multiple wounds. In the center, a kneeling samurai prepares to plunge his sword into the throat of a warrior lying on the ground. Heated fighting continues along the river below as shots streak across the night sky and smoke billows upwards. A poignant image of the last moments of the Takeda clan.
