Pre-WWII Woodblock Postcards - We recently purchased a fantastic collection of Japanese woodblock postcards dating from the 1930s, just before WWII. The Japanese traditionally send postcards as New Year's greetings to family and friends, a custom known as nengajo. These postcards most often feature the animal of the zodiac year, but other subjects include beauties, kabuki scenes, landscapes, and greetings in text or calligraphy. Some are amusing and comic, while others are elegant and refined. These are beautifully printed by hand from carved wood blocks (just like traditional woodblock prints), with attractive detail and fine color. Some also include deluxe embellishments such as mica or metallic pigment. Bid now on these fun collectible designs!

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Slight toning, soiling, and rubbing. Many of the postcards are blank (unused), while some have writing on the reverse or stamps with cancellation marks dating to Showa 6 to 13 (1931 to 1938). Please see photos for details. Generally in good to nice condition overall.
