Fukushima's Siberian Expedition, 1893

Comments - Fantastic depiction of General Yasumasa Fukushima riding through the snow on horseback during his expedition to Siberia in 1893. After visiting Berlin as a military attache in 1893, Fukushima decided to return to Japan via an epic trek across two continents, from Berlin to Vladivostok. His 14,000 kilometer ride earned him the Order of the Sacred Treasures, third class, as well as the admiration of the Japanese public. This terrific portrait shows him riding through a valley in the snow, flanked by tall trees and mountains. He wears a hooded, double-breasted fur coat and black leather boots, his sword hanging at his side as he holds onto a cloth-wrapped bundle with his gloved hand. A full moon glows faintly in the distance. A great image of this national hero and a rare subject by Chikanobu.
