The Five Festivals: New Year's

Comments - Lovely depiction of beauties preparing for the New Year's festival. At lower left, a beauty in a lavender kimono kneels beside a low table serving as an altar, set with an incense burner, a pair of vases, and an offering tray with tiny dishes of food. Behind her, another table holds a tray with giant mochi or rice cakes stacked on it, a holiday tradition. The woman standing in the center carries twisted lengths of straw to hang on a shimenawa, a rope used for ritual purification in the Shinto religion. The boy at her feet grins happily, a sword at his side. At right, a beauty in a brown robe holds a doll, while the girl behind her plays with a feathered shuttlecock used in a New Year's game similar to badminton. Beautiful color and detail in the elegant kimono, obi, and furnishings, including embossing in the white kimono trim and touches of burnishing in the black lacquer objects. The background features delicate allover cloth embossing. A beautiful design, one we've never offered before.
