Matsumoto Koshiro as Umeo, 1926 - Terrific, bold kabuki portrait of Matsumoto Koshiro as Umeo (Umeomaru) in a drama based on the life of the great scholar and nobleman Sugawara no Michizane. He stares ahead with an intent, determined expression. The profile view highlights his dramatic red stage makeup and striking wig, with flared wings at the side, a topknot at back, and forelock tied into a ponytail with a bushy end like a pompon. His outer kimono features a large blue and white check, worn over a kimono patterned with his namesake "ume" or plum blossoms. A shimmering white mica background adds a nice contrast to the large colorful character. Beautifully detailed with embossing in the white tie around the topknot and handsome wood grain impression in the blue areas of the robe. A striking design.
