Original Utamaro (1750 - 1806) Japanese Woodblock Print
Hanaogi of the Ogiya

Comments - Beautiful original Utamaro portrait of the famous courtesan Hanogi of the Ogiya with a young attendant. The beauty smiles as she looks over her shoulder, holding a slender pipe. She wears a kimono with a geometric pattern over a rosy under robe with a cherry blossom design, tied with a dotted obi in soft gold. Her hair is pulled back into a smooth bun, adorned with a comb, many hairpins, and a pink ribbon. Her companion chats happily, her open mouth revealing tiny even teeth. Her kimono features an attractive peony print, the blossoms carefully detailed with veining on the petals. Drawn with graceful flowing line work, with delicate detail in the hairlines. A classic Utamaro Edo era beauty portrait, and a rare opportunity to acquire a lovely original woodblock print by this ukiyo-e master. A terrific choice for the discerning collector.
