Heroes Clowning Around in Hell, circa 1843 - 1846

Comments - Fantastic depiction that turns the tables on Hell, with samurai torturing demons instead of the other way around. At lower left, two men force Emma-o, the god of the underworld, to look into the karmic mirror of Hell, which reflects the true events of each soul's life. At bottom center, a man pounds a horned green demon in a mortar, while to his right, a warrior dunks another denizen of Hell into a boiling cauldron. Just above, a samurai sits at the table where Emma-o normally presides over those entering the underworld, jeering and holding up an enormous cup of sake. A terrific comic image with wonderful detail.

Artist - Kuniteru I (1808 - 1876)

Image Size - 9 5/8" x 13 3/4" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Losses at top edge in margin, a couple small thinning spots repaired. Faint staining at top edge, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
