Original 19th century Japanese Woodblock Print
Raiko's Retainers at Mt. Oe, circa 1818 - 1830

Comments - Great depiction of two of Raiko's (Minamoto no Yoritomo's) retainers in the lair of the horrible Demon of Oeyama, Shuten-doji, who had been kidnapping and holding beauties hostage. Here, they prepare to face the monster as gusts of wind sweep across the scene. The warrior in the foreground rests on one knee as he thrusts his sword up, a determined expression on his face. The fellow above him scowls angrily, his eyes bulging and his hair whipping about his head. Wonderful detail in the expressive faces and armor. A bold samurai design.
