Sisters Avenging Their Father's Death

Comments - Terrific scene of the courtesan Miyagino and her younger sister Shinobu battling with their father's murderer, Shiga Danshichi. The two women swore to avenge his death, and after secretly training in the martial arts, challenged Shiga to a duel. They are shown here fighting the warrior in an arena enclosed by a bamboo fence, with samurai and nobleman gathered to watch, and a daimyo sitting in a pavilion at the back of the area. Scowling, Shiga leaps on one foot to avoid the naginata thrust at him by Miyagino. Her sister wields a sickle attached to a chain, attempting to entangle the samurai's sword. The beauties wear white kimono, the sleeves tied back out of the way with red sashes. Nice detail in the expressive figures and landscape setting. A great depiction of these heroic women, who succeeded in killing Shiga.
