Dried Persimmons, 1906

Series; Fashions of the Day

Dried Persimmons, 1906 - Charming portrait of a beauty holding her young daughter on her shoulder, looking up with a smile as the child reaches for the dried persimmons hanging overhead. She wears an intricately detailed kimono with wavy stripes in rust and gray, with a light blue collar featuring embossed lines of flowing water. The child is dressed in a lavender robe with silver mica butterflies and bands of blue with stylized white flowers. The woman's hair is beautifully detailed with extensive burnishing. The portrait is inset against a soft blue background shaded to white, with a bamboo trellis and falling maple leaves. The child's arm overlaps the inset, while the leaves fall down into it, and a wonderful sense of depth. An exquisitely printed image from a rarely seen series, with additional silver mica in the beauty's hair ornament and green obi. Yamamoto Shoun studied Kano School painting, but is best known for his lovely woodblock portraits of women. His work bridges the traditional ukiyo-e and shin hanga movements in Japanese art. We've seen this design offered elsewhere online for more than $1,000! Don't miss this opportunity to acquire a classic beauty image from this transitional period.
