Leaping Beauty and Stopping a Swordfight, 1866

Comments - Interesting view of a shrine in springtime with lots of activity taking place. At bottom center, a commoner stands atop a striped robe tossed over the weapons of two swordsmen, halting their fight. At left, a young beauty leaps off the verandah railing, holding an umbrella over her shoulder, the kneeling matron below watching her with alarm. Above her, two sumo wrestlers struggle, one pinning the other's arm behind his back. On the stone steps at right, a third sumo grips the back of the neck of a fellow waving a sword. A blossoming cherry tree frames the blue sky above. An intriguing kabuki subject, with wonderfully expressive figures.
