Lady Ono no Komachi, No. 3 - Lovely portrait of the famous ninth-century poet Ono no Komachi reading a prayer for rain at the request of the emperor during a terrible drought. At a Shinto Shrine, she stands beside a low altar, holding the paper stretched out before her as she intones her plea. She wears a fine white outer kimono patterned with softly colored blossoms over a white robe tucked into hakama pants, her long hair reaching to the floor. Gray clouds gather in the sky and bolts of lightening appear, the sign of thunderstorms coming in response to her prayer. The inset at upper left shows the poet as an elderly woman, poor and haggard but still able to enjoy the beauty of the seasons as geese descend past a crescent moon. Beautifully detailed with delicate cloth embossing in the white kimono.
