The Cat Monster of Okazaki Village, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene of the cat monster of Okazaki performing a dance in the ruined temple of Muryoji. The monster appears in the guise of an old woman with shaggy gray hair, hopping on one foot and waving her arm as she looks down with a terrible grimace. She has an elegant kimono draped over the shoulders of her brown print robe, the fabric trailing on the floor behind her. Below, three strange cats with forked tails dance about as well, prancing on their hind legs, waiving their paws in imitation of the woman. Two have scarves draped over their heads, while the third has a dotted towel wrapped around its neck. Two samurai watch from either side, the warrior at right frowning angrily, his arms firmly folded over his chest. His companion looks on with a worried expression, holding his sword in his hand. Behind them, the dangling reeds of the broken blinds creates an eerie effect in the dark background. A terrific supernatural subject, wonderfully detailed. A great choice for a collector interested in Japanese ghosts and folklore.
