Education for Girls, 1891

Comments - Charming Chikanobu triptych of three beauties entertaining a group of young children at an elegant home, teaching them manners and etiquette. At right, two girls enjoy a snack served by a woman in a lavender kimono, who dishes rice into black lacquer bowls. In the center a child enjoys a mochi cake while another carries a covered cup of tea on a small tray, a beauty guiding her with a gentle hand as she smiles down over her shoulder at the girls eating. At left another woman takes part in a hand game with two girls. The verandah opens onto a courtyard garden paved with stepping stones. Beautiful detail in the interior setting and the sumptuous fabrics, with embossing on the white kimono collar. A handsome subject, beautifully rendered.
