Lieutenant Ito Ryutaro Reaching the Fort at Mt. Osho, 1895

Comments - Dramatic depiction of Lieutenant Ito Ryutaro reaching the Chinese fort at Mt. Osho on November 6, 1894. He boldly climbs up the stone wall, gripping his sword in one hand as he breaches the gun emplacement. Behind the wall, a Chinese soldier falls backwards with blood running from a wound to his head, the man beside him frightened by the arrive of the enemy. Shots streak across the image leaving orange trails, exploding in starbursts of light, the sky filled with clouds of smoke. The asymmetrical composition heightens the drama and impact of the warrior's triumphant assault on the fortress. A great design from the Sino-Japanese War.

Artist - Toshikata (1866 - 1908)
