Shirabyoshi Dancers and Monks, 1884

Comments - Terrific scene kabuki scene from a tale about a young shirabyoshi dancer named Hanako, who comes to Dojoji Temple to perform before the new temple bell. In reality, she is the spirit of Kiyohime, who killed the monk Anchin when he rejected her love. She is shown at left holding a folding fan and the red tasseled cords of her court cap, watching the men with a sober expression. The monks exchange puzzled expressions, scratching their heads as strange feelings overcome them. The large bell hangs over head against a red sky, framed by blossoming cherry trees. A handsome illustration from this popular drama.
