By Rolling Boulders Kato Kiyomasa Destroys the Strong Fortress of the Orankai, 1895

Comments - Dramatic image of the great general Kato Kiyomasa during the Korean campaign, looking down from atop a rocky peak at the fortress of the Orankai. Beyond the tree at upper right, his men maneuver a giant boulder into position to push it over the edge to crash down onto the enemy complex. Kiyomasa leans forward, resting his hand atop his thigh, a look of fierce determination on his face and a pole arm in his other hand. He wears a vest with a red lining over a suit of armor and yellow patterned hakama pants, and a tall black court cap. In the valley below, flags flutter above the castle, which is rendered in muted tones, and low-lying clouds obscure the base of the mountains opposite. Nicely detailed with burnishing in the armor. A great composition with fine bokashi shading, also in the collection of the British Museum.
