Masterpieces of Ukiyo-e - Wonderful, complete set of 24 reprints of ukiyo-e masterworks by a variety of artists, published by the venerable Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints in Tokyo. This handsome folio includes reprints of famous works by Kunitora, Utamaro, Hiroshige, Harushige (falsely signed Harunobu), Eisen (2), Harunobu (large format), Kunisada (2), Toyoharu (2), Toyokuni, Yoshitora, Kiyonaga, Kuniyoshi (2), Hokkei, Toyokuni II, Hokusai, Toyohiro, Shucho, Gogaku, Hokuju, and Shinsai. These designs are beautifully printed with natural pigments on handmade washi paper, following in the ukiyo-e tradition. Informative text sheets in English and Japanese accompanying each reprint, along with a booklet in Japanese..

The Presentation - A traditional cloth-covered box with tie closures contains the set, with each reprint housed in its own folder behind a windowed viewing page. Each reprint is mounted at two points along the top or side to the folder. Each folder has a small black and white image of the print inside affixed to the outside, with the text page inside the folder. The booklet includes a table of contents, information and small images in black and white, along with photos of the woodblock print process, all in Japanese. A separate sheet with publishing information in Japanese is taped inside the outer box. A terrific opportunity to acquire a beautiful, complete reprint set featuring classic ukiyo-e designs by noted artists.

Size - Print size varies from 10" x 7 7/8" + margins as shown to 9 1/2" x 14 1/4" + margins as shown; folders 19" x 13 1/8"; overall size 20" x 13 3/4" x 1 1/4"
Condition - Prints: with excellent color and detail as shown. Two prints are heavily toned and spotted, two have light toning and spotting, and three have spotting at edges (mostly not visible behind windowed viewing page). One print has a small rubbed spot, and one has creasing at edge. Folders: slight creasing at edges, a few have slight soiling or spotting. Text sheets: five text sheets have toning and spotting. A couple have creases. Booklet: a few light creases, slight soiling and small tear at edge of back cover. Outer case: creasing, slight soiling, and wear at edges; paper lining of case spotted and creased with a few tears; ends of ties fraying. Please see photos for details.
