Akasaka by Hokusai (1760 - 1849)

Original Hokusai (1760 - 1849) Japanese Woodblock Print
Akasaka

Series; Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, circa 1806

Hokusai's Tokaido Road, circa 1806 - Handsome print from a wonderful early Tokaido Road series designed by Hokusai around 1806. Most images focus on the figure rather than the landscape, showing travelers up close as they journey along the Tokaido or pause for a break along the roadside. Beautifully colored and detailed, these lively scenes offer an intriguing view of the sights and experiences encountered along this famed route, bordered with delicately striped pink clouds. This subject includes a small paper label on reverse marked "Guaranteed Genuine by Y. Tsuruki, Shinmozen, Kyoto." Y. Tsuruki is still in business in Kyoto on Shinmozen Street, selling screens and lacquer objects. An interesting provenance for this early Hokusai print.

Artist - Hokusai (1760 - 1849)

Image Size - 8 7/8" x 6 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Paper remnants on reverse at top corners from previous mounting. Small loss at edge, repaired. Toning, soiling, and rubbing, a few small creases. Color added to sign. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
