Series; Imaginary Comparison of Rising Sumo Wrestlers

Nakamura Fukusuke I as Shirafuji, 1858 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Nakamura Fukusuke I as imagined in the role of the sumo wrestler Shirafuji. He looks to the side with an angry grimace, his brows furrowed, an ornate pipe decorated with the head of an oni or demon in his hand. He wears a rust-colored kimono patterned with writing and tied with a red tie-dyed obi, the robe hanging open at his chest and a towel draped over his shoulder. Wide diagonal bands of solid dark blue and a tie-dyed print creating a striking background for the figure. A bold design, nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and soft pink shading around the eyes.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Small hole, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and offsetting. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
