Minamoto no Yoritomo Proceeding to the Capital, 1864

Comments - Intriguing triptych depicting the journeys of two different shoguns to the capital in Kyoto to pay their respects to the emperor. At upper left, Minamoto no Yoritomo arrives at the Imperial Palace during his rule in the twelfth century. Wearing formal court robes, he makes his way up the steps, with courtiers kneeling in attendance. By contrast, the Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi proceeds to the capital by way of a steamboat, taking advantage of this most modern form of transportation for his journey in 1864. Undulating waves crash against the side of the ship as smoke billows from the stacks. Draperies provide privacy for the shogun and his court on the upper deck. A terrific image with wonderful detail and fine bokashi shading. A great, creative design.
