Bando Mitsugoro III as Daihanji no Kiyosumi, 1818

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Bando Mitsugoro III as Daihanji no Kiyosumi in the play "Imoseyama Onna Teikin." He stands on the edge of a river separating him from the estate of his neighbor, the widow Sadaka. One spring, his son falls in love with her daughter, unaware that their parents are bitter enemies, which leads to tragedy. He grimaces angrily, holding a flowering cherry tree over his shoulder, as he looks across the water. He wears a diamond-patterned robe with floral medallions over a black kimono, white socks, and sandals, his graying hair pulled back into a thinning topknot. A beautiful design with wonderful detail.

Artist - Toyokuni I (1769 - 1825)

Image Size - 14 7/8" x 10 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Stitching holes at left edge from previous binding, small loss at edge and a few small wormholes, repaired. Slight soiling and rubbing, a few light creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
