Honchomaru's Rescue, 1851

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene depicting the rescue of Honchomaru Tsunagoro, previously known as Hiranoya Tokubei, by the Buddhist deity Fudo Myoo. The hapless man grips a rope tossed down to him by the god, looking up over his shoulder at Kongara Doji, one of Fudo's heavenly attendants, who is joined at right by Seitaka Doji. Fudo Myoo appears in a bank of swirling clouds above the undulating waves, surrounded by flames and holding an upright sword in his other hand. Ichikawa Danjuro VIII appears in a double role as both Honchomaru and Fudo Myoo of Mt. Narita, with Ichikawa Kuzo II at left and Bando Shuka I at right. A great illustration from the play "Genji Moyo Furisode Hinagata," also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
