Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Capital - Handsome print from a collaborative series by Toyokuni III and Hiroshige, published between 1852 and 1853. Toyokuni III created the large actor portraits in the foreground, with Hiroshige designing the smaller landscape and still-life insets relating to the featured restaurant or its location. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has many of these images in its collection. These attractive designs are beautifully colored and detailed, making them a great choice for a collector interested in Edo era woodblocks.

The Chushuntei Restaurant: Nakamura Utaemon IV as Yuranosuke 1852 - Great kabuki portrait of Nakamura Utaemon IV as Yuranosuke in a scene from the classic drama about the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura." He looks up with an anguished expression after learning that his master, Lord Hangan, has been forced to commit suicide. He wears the ronin's traditional black and white dogtooth bordered robe over a tan kimono and armor, his thinning hair pulled back into a slender topknot. The courtyard garden of the Chushuntei Restaurant is shown above, while the inset at left depicts a waitress carry a tray of dishes. A terrific, bold image.
