Series; Amusements of Foreigners

French Couple, 1861 - Fantastic Yokohama depiction of a French couple. The bearded man sits in a wooden armchair smoking a cigar as he hands a small glass case to his wife. He wears a flat blue hat over his curly hair, and a black jacket over a white vest and pants. His wife stands beside him. She wears a dress with a full green skirt over a long sleeved blue blouse, a yellow wrap tied over her shoulders. Her unusual hat is topped with flowers and features pink cloth trailing over her shoulders. In her hand, she delicately holds the handle of a fan decorated with pink blossoms. Wonderful detail in this terrific illustration of a foreign couple in Yokohama, as seen through Japanese eyes. A great subject for a collector.

Artist - Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)

Image Size - 13 1/4" x 9"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at top corners and along right and bottom edges from previous mounting. Slight toning and soiling, a few thinning spots and creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
