Battle at a Minamoto Encampment

Comments - Terrific scene of a battle taking place at a Minamoto encampment. At right, a samurai attempts to restrain a general, grasping him around the waist as the general brandishes a sword high above his head. He wears a fine robe over his armor and a horned battle helmet topped with a dragon, his feet spread and ready to leap into action. At left, warriors fight on horseback and on foot, swinging swords and spears. Tent walls are strung from the tall pine trees and the paulownia mon or crest of the Minamoto clan rises on a tasseled standard at right. A castle can be seen at upper left, with more towers rising among the mountains in the distance. A great dramatic image with wonderful detail, enhanced by a handsome natural setting.

Artist - Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 29" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. Slight separation along vertical centerfold in center panel, small tear at edge, repaired. Toning, slight soiling and creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
