Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Record of the Sino-French War, 1884

Comments - Fantastic depiction of the Battle of Fuzhou, the first engagement of the Sino-French War, fought between France and China in 1884 - 1885 over control of Tonkin (northern Vietnam). The French Navy attacked the Chinese off the Pagoda Anchorage in Mawei Harbor. At right, French troops climb down a ladder over the side of their ship into a smaller boat waiting to ferry them across the choppy water to the shore, joining the men already landed and fighting Chinese soldiers. In the center, another boat encounters the enemy, firing shots at close quarters and fighting with swords. The waves are carefully drawn and detailed, giving them an unusual, almost solid appearance. A dramatic and rare image from the Sino-French War, detailed with extensive burnishing in the warships. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
