Young Prince Coming of Age, 1856

Comments - Handsome depiction of a ceremony for a young prince coming of age. The boy stands in the center, dressed in new adult clothing, including a purple brocade robe over long hakama pants that trail beneath his feet. A black court cap waits on an offering stand at left, while the tray in the center holds a long lock of his hair that has just been cut to signify the transition to adulthood. Woman gather around him excitedly, one holding a poem slip and the other his sword. At right, Prince Genji watches happily, gesturing with his fan. The panels lining the back of the room feature a magnificent view of Mt. Fuji, the peak rising above yellow clouds, with boats on the lake below. An attractive design with beautiful color.
