Sisters Avenging Their Father's Death, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Terrific scene of the courtesan Miyagino and her younger sister Shinobu battling their father's murderer, Shiga Danshichi. The two women swore to avenge his death, and after secretly training in the martial arts, challenged Shiga to a duel. They are shown here fearlessly facing the warrior. In the center, Shinobu uses a sickle attached to a chain to block a blow from Shiga's sword. He glares angrily as he leans forward, gripping his weapon with both hands. At left, Miyagino watches with her naginata ready, the sleeves of her kimono tied back out of the way. The fight takes place in an area enclosed by tent walls hung on a bamboo fence, with nobleman seated along the edge at left and a daimyo watching from the interior of a house at right. An incredible depiction of these heroic women, who succeeded in killing Shiga.
