Emperor and Empress Attending a Kabuki Performance, 1889

Comments - Terrific depiction of the Meiji Emperor and Empress and members of the nobility attending a kabuki theater performance. The emperor and his wife sit behind a cloth-covered table at right, with palace ladies-in-waiting sitting in rows of plus red velvet chairs before them. The women are elegantly dressed in the latest Western fashions, wearing full bustled skirts and bonnets adorned with flowers, feathers, and ruffles. On the stage at left, actors perform a scene from the play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho), where Yoshitsune and his men attempt to sneak across the Ataka Border disguised as yamabushi or mountain priests. A beautifully detailed image with lively color and an attractive interior setting. Includes burnishing in the black uniform and dresses.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 27 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Ink offsetting, slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Otherwise good.
