47 Ronin, Act 7, 1854

Comments - Handsome scene from the classic kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura," based on the true story of the 47 ronin, showing Yuranosuke at the Ichiriki Teahouse. Pretending to lead a debauched life so that no one will suspect him of planning a vendetta against Lord Moronao, Oboshi Yuranosuke accepts an invitation to the Ichiriki Teahouse by Moronao's retainer, Ono Kudayu. Here, he gestures with his fan as a samurai wrestles a man in a black kimono over his shoulders with both hands. At right, the beauty Okara reacts with dismay, flinging her hands out at her sides. Behind them, a large platter of fish and bowls of food wait on a red lacquer table, with a sake kettle on the floor nearby. The actors include Onoe Baiko IV, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, and Arashi Yoshisaburo III. An interesting image from this popular drama, nicely detailed, with embossing in the violet and yellow panels at upper right.
