Moon Viewing at Shinsu, 1861

Comments - Attractive scene of Prince Genji and a companion viewing the moon at Shinsu. He smiles as he watches a line of birds descending for the evening past a full moon, a sheaf of paper in one hand and a brush in the other as he composes a poem. The beauty behind him holds a writing set on a black lacquer tray. She wears a kimono shaded from blue to tan with a charming design of fish swimming. In the flooded rice fields of the valley below, the moon is reflected multiple times, and a few leaves drift down from a maple tree framing the scene at right. A handsome image, detailed with touches of embossing in Genji's kimono and fine bokashi shading in the water, mountains, and sky.
