Prince Genji and Beauties Writing Poem Slips, 1857

Comments - Charming depiction of Prince Genji arriving at a mansion where beauties are busy writing poem slips. He hides behind the sliding shoji panel at left with a mischievous grin, but a woman and girl spy his shadow and point out his presence. At right, a kneeling beauty rests her chin on her hand with a dreamy expression as she pauses to compose a verse, while the beauty standing next to her holds a book. In the room behind her, a scroll hangs on the wall with a floral arrangement on a red lacquer stand below, and a shelf holds lacquer boxes. Cormorant fishermen can be seen on the water in the distance, bright red flames coming from their fire baskets. Wonderful detail in the elegant setting and furnishing.
