47 Ronin, Act 1

Comments - Handsome triptych illustrating Act 1 from the "Kanadehon Chushingura," the kabuki play based on the famous tale of the 47 ronin. The evil Lord Moronao stands at left, scowling unhappily, wearing a voluminous black robe and tall court cap. Lord Wakasanosuke kneels behind him at the foot of the stone palace steps, grimacing with rage. He has seen Moronao try to slip a love letter into the sleeve of Lady Kaoyo, with wife of Lord Hangan, who is shown at right with an agitated expression. Great expressive figures with nice bokashi shading in the clothing.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29 7/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Losses at three corners, a few wormholes, repaired. Slight soiling and rubbing, ink offsetting. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
