Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Under a Plum Tree, 1857

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a couple in a courtyard beneath a blossoming plum tree. The man sitting on the bench at left seems worried as he looks over his shoulder, a fan in one hand and the other curled into a fist. The matron smiles at him with a strange expression, fanning herself and leaning against a wooden post. She wears a brown striped kimono trimmed with a blue floral print, tied with a black obi. From left, the actors are Kataoka Nizaemon VIII and Ichikawa Dannosuke V as the wife of Tozaemon. Nice expressive figures.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 19 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two attached panels, backed with paper. A few small holes, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and creasing, rubbing at edges, paper slightly curled. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
