The Peony Lantern, 1892

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene based on the famous ghost story "The Peony Lantern." The beauty Tsuyu fell in love with the handsome young Shinzaburo, and after she and her maidservant died suddenly, they visited the samurai each night as ghosts. He was, however, unaware that they were spirits, and the story ends tragically. Dressed in a lavender kimono patterned with blossoms and flowing water, the pretty young woman playfully chases fireflies with a red fan, the evening breeze blowing her flowing sleeves. Her servant carries the peony lantern by a handle, frowning slightly as she looks over her shoulder. The two women appear in a pale blue cloud against the dark night sky, with Shinzaburo watching from his porch at right. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro V, Onoe Eizaburo, and Onoe Kikunosuke. A fantastic and imaginative illustration from this timeless tale, drawn with fine detail in the faces and hair and attractive color.
