The Third Month (Yayoi), 1855

Series; Genji in the Twelve Months

The Third Month (Yayoi), 1855 - Terrific depiction of Prince Genji and beauties celebrating Girls' Day or Hinamatsuri with a young princess. She sits on a cushion at left, smiling as a woman carries in a black lacquer tray with miniature dishes of food atop it. A doll sits on a box in front of her, and a tiered display at the back of the room holds more lacquer trays and miniature dishes, and even a tiny tea ceremony set. A woven vase with an arrangement of yellow flowers and blossoming branches frames the display at right. A charming design with wonderful detail in the elegant fabrics and household furnishings. Includes embossing in the white kimono trim and a subtle burnished pattern in the red kimono at left.
