Threatening a Beauty, 1856

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of a rogue threatening a beauty in a courtyard. He leans forward with an angry frown, a sword concealed behind his back. The beauty kneels at left, extending her hand in a stopping motion with a meek smile. Behind them, the figures of dancers performing the famous "Ise Ondo" can be seen in silhouette on the shoji windows of a teahouse, with red lanterns hanging from the eaves. At far right, a bucket hangs over a well next to a pine tree. An intriguing image with a handsomely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 19 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two separate panels. Vertical fold near left edge of right panel. Slight separation at ends of fold, repaired. Slight soiling, slight rubbing near edges, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
