Series; Twelve Hours of Springtime Leisure

Hour of the Boar (10 pm), 1856 - Attractive image from a series depicting the activities of Yoshiwara courtesans according to hours of the clock corresponding to the twelve animals of the zodiac. For the Hour of the Boar from 10 pm to midnight, a courtesan prepares for bed, hanging her outer kimono over a folding screen that provides privacy. Her kimono is shaded from deep blue to delicately embossed white with a design of bamboo stalks, tied with an obi with bands of red tie-dyed and furry black cloth. She looks over her shoulder, a roll of tissues in her mouth. The inset at upper left shows a servant carrying a futon over his shoulders, followed by a kamuro or child apprentice holding two pillows. A handsome subject from this rarely seen Toyokuni III beauty series.
