Series; Thirty-two Aspects in the Modern Style, 1859
The Type with a Secret Lover - Beautiful portrait of a beauty writing a letter to her secret lover, a brush caught between her teeth. She smiles as she rolls up the message, the paper decorated with geometric shapes and delicately embossed waves. Her outer robe features a light green and blue stripe, worn over a red tie-dyed kimono and a red under robe. Her hair is elegantly arranged in two large loops, adorned with a comb and many hairpins. The inset at upper right by Gengyo shows a tea bowl with a whisk and small spoon next to a jar, alongside a feather duster. A lovely image, beautifully composted and detailed, set off by a deep jewel-tone blue background. Includes embossing in the white kimono collar. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
