47 Ronin, Act 6

Series; A Joruri Performance of The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers, 1865

47 Ronin, Act 6 - Handsome kabuki group portrait from the play "Chushingura Sugata no Eawase," a joruri performed at the Ichimura Theater in 1865. A joruri is a ballad drama with chanted narration accompanied by the shamisen. This scene from Act 7 shows the hunters who have found Yoichibei's corpse while out hunting along the Yamazaki Highway. Each carries his gun over his shoulder, and the two men in the foreground exchange alarmed grimaces over the discovery of the body. The actors are Ichikawa Danzo I as Tanuki no Kakubei, Nakamura Tsuruzo I as Metsubo Yahachi, and Ichimura Kakitsu IV as Tanegashima Gonroku. Great expressive figures, nicely colored and detailed. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
