Series; Beauties Compared with Scenic Spots of Our Country

Wakanoura in Kii Province, early 1830s - Charming portrait of a beauty sitting on the edge of a sunken hearth, warming herself. She is huddled under a blue checked kimono with black trim, holding one sleeve to her chest, as she looks back over her shoulder. A collapsible round paper lantern rests on the floor at left. An inset at upper right depicts a view of Wakanoura in Kii Province, done in aizuri-e or all blue pigment, framed by lotus leaves and blossoms and a miniature hand drum, and trimmed with many beaded tassels. A fascinating design, attractively detailed, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Image Size - 15 1/8" x 10 1/4"
