Elderly Woman with Memorial Tablet, 1856

Comments - Fascinating scene from the tale of the Soga Brothers of Sogo Juro Sukenari paying a visit to an elderly woman. The matron holds a memorial tablet carefully wrapped in cloth, smiling down at Juro as he kneels before her. Her white hair is faintly embossed, as is the white collar of her kimono. Juro looks up at her solemnly while the young beauty beside him tilts her head and pats her hair coyly. Soga Goro Tokimune waits outside at left, holding a woven hat. At right, a shrine is set up in the niche behind the elderly woman, with a low black lacquer table below holding a string of prayer beads. The memorial tablet will be placed in the shrine for ancestor worship. Wonderful detail in the interior furnishings and fabrics. Kawarazaki Gonjuro I appears as Soga Goro Tokimune. A handsome triptych with an intriguing subject.
