Playing in Boats at Ryogoku Bridge, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Charming triptych depicting beauties enjoying boat rides near the wooden pilings of Ryogoku Bridge. At left, a woman in a gourd patterned blue and white cotton kimono holds up a stand with a monkey atop it, its leash attached to her wrist. The monkey is dressed in a kimono and woven hat, and holds a closed fan. Beside her, a young girl plays a drum. In the center, a beauty rests one hand against the roof of a pleasure boat, smiling as she watches the animal's antics. Her flowing kimono sleeves flutter in the cool evening breeze, a full moon overhead and mist obscuring the buildings in gray silhouette along the shore. A lovely scene with wonderful detail.
